We invented a new verb: weeviling.
Inspecting every strand of pasta for a spaghetti dinner was every bit of fun as having a games night. We were looking for weevils, and evidence thereof. Here is a video that captures the lively atmosphere of removing bugs from pasta.
In the tropics, there is no escaping weevils. But, here are some steps I take to avoid them.
- Carefully examine packages before purchase: At the store, shake packages and examine the contents. Short white cylinders of equal size are bug eggs. Sometimes, the weevils literally crawl from the packaging.
- Remove cardboard: as much as possible, I remove cardboard packaging as cardboard might harbour inspects. In a humid climate, cardboard moulds.
- Freeze susceptible items, including: flour, dried legumes, rice, and pasta. Freezing kills live weevils.
- Remove from freezer and inspect, sift flour before using.
- After cooking, inspect again.

Lorraine, when you were two years old we moved from England to a furnished apartment in Montreal. I was making oatmeal for your breakfast and placed your bowl in front of you and went to put the saucepan in the sink when I noticed things in it that didn’t look like oatmeal. Weevils. I quickly pulled your bowl, with your spoon in the air ready to plunge in, maybe you’d already plunged in, I don’t know. But answering the question in your big blue eyes, I said, we’re having toast today. My experience with weevils.
