Karen Escher Draws: The Card Game She Illustrated on Our Boat at Age 10

As some people might already know, our daughter, Karen, is an avid artist.

When Karen was 10 years old, she illustrated a boxed card game with a medieval style. The game is called “The Princess and the P’s”. She was asked to illustrate by a game designer whom we met in the Bahamas in 2017 named Emily Lindahl. Emily is now in the Dominican Republic.

Karen was asked to create black-and-white drawings with continuous lines so that Emily could add color. Under Emily’s direction, Karen did the artwork and made revisions for the marketing video, game, and box. Because Emily acknowledged Karen’s work on the materials, Karen had to design her own unique signature in cursive.

All of the artwork that you see in the video below was done by Karen.

The game box for “The Princess and the P’s” is flat-out adorable. It is made like a tiny bed, and the backs of the deck of cards look like a quilt.

Behind the scenes

Karen had a lot of fun with this project. We were in Grenada at the time — with palm trees and clear water around us — it required a lot of patience and discipline. She communicated with Emily and sent her drawings for feedback by Facebook Messenger.

I offered a few “helpful” tips on medieval art — “The hands, the hands are so important, Karen!” — but she quickly reminded me she would find her own stride. And she did.

At one point, Karen researched medieval clothing and punishments.

Some of the punishments were horrendous like a goat licking a person’s feet to the bone. Other punishments, like medieval shame relating to being naked, were simply strange.

This drawing didn’t make it into the final game but I shall include it here — call it exclusive content from a proud mom.
