We left Suva, Fiji a couple of days ago. We are now on our way to Port Vila, Vanuatu. The SV Aphrodite PredictWind tracking page looks like this, as I write from the helm, while sailing from Fiji to Vanuatu.
The colors indicate wind speed and the little white streaks look like snowballs that show wind direction.
The white streaks are working in our favour, just as they have for other sailors, explorers and traders of yore. As you can see, the winds are generally trending west.
To go back east is possible but it would be like climbing an escalator in reverse. Or, going up a toboggan hill while being pelted with snowballs. In short, the wind and the waves would tend to work against us.
